This week’s highlight was finally picking our first pineapple! We planted it late last year, and the people who gave it to us told us we would have our first pineapple before 2025 was over, and here we are.
Since this was the first time we planted a pineapple sucker, we were excited about our first fruit. As we watched it grow, we wondered when it would be ready to pick. Of course, Sherni’s shenanigans last week (where she tried to take a bite) made me think the pineapple might be ripe and ready to pick.
If you’ve never been up close and personal with a pineapple plant, it’s quite prickly, which is why Sherni’s attempt to take a bite was an indicator that it was ready. I’m sure her super-powered nostrils could smell the sweetness, but I couldn’t until I had the pineapple up close and personal.
Now that we’ve grown our first pineapple, we’re excited to do it again, especially since there are another three suckers on the plant. I’ve got the top of the one we picked sitting in water, waiting for it to start rooting.
I’m excited to grow fruits and vegetables in a tropical climate. We already have some plantain, banana, coconut, avocado, and two different types of mangos growing in our yard, and we’re looking for more trees, including a pomegranate.
Of course, with two dogs in the yard, anything we plant must be in grow boxes that the pooches can’t get into (who am I kidding?). 🤣
In the last few weeks, my phone has been showing me memories of when we had a garden in Canada. I miss the morning visits to the garden to see what has blossomed, sprouted, or is ready to be picked. I might start with a herb box for our seasonings and take it from there.
The exciting thing about gardening in the Caribbean is the variety of things you can grow in this climate that would be impossible in Canada without a greenhouse. I know it will take time for our trees to start providing fruit, but as I said in last week’s post about the dogs, I consider myself a patient person, so I can wait. 😉
If you’re wondering about the taste of our first pineapple, it was sweet! We put some in a smoothie and enjoyed the rest. I’m looking forward to planting the suckers and enjoying more sweet pineapples in the future! 🩵
