I was one of the millions of Canadians without Rogers service on Friday. Fortunately, or unfortunately, I have my internet, mobile, and television with the same company, so it was a quiet day. I didn’t mind it. Thankfully I don’t need to make sales calls to earn a living, and the edits that I was asked to do had a 48-hour turnaround, so I wasn’t panicking when I saw them on Saturday morning.
When things like Friday’s outage happen, it makes us realize our dependency on technology. It also made us think that maybe we shouldn’t have all phones in the house with the same provider! 😉
The last time an outage happened, Rogers resolved it in a few hours. This time it was the entire day! I guess it’s a good thing that it happened in the summer and school’s out. I remember the last outage; I saw parents complaining on Twitter that their kids couldn’t complete their homework assignments.
Once I gave up rebooting our modem, thinking it was a problem on our end, we went out to get some things done, and that’s when we learned that it was a nationwide outage. I’m grateful that I was in a position on Friday to go on with my day without needing my phone or internet connection. Thankfully, I downloaded the book I’m currently reading on my tablet so I could catch up on my reading without any distractions. 🤓
Friday was a nice break, even if it wasn’t voluntary. I often put my phone on silent during the day, so I don’t get distracted by calls or notifications. To me, Friday was an extreme version of that. If everything happens for a reason, maybe the outage was to remind us that we don’t have to be online all the time? Perhaps it’s a sign that there need to be more internet, cable, and phone service providers?
Or maybe it’s a conspiracy created by out-of-work carrier pigeons looking to inspire people to change how they communicate! 😉
