One of my writing assignments last week was on career advice. It was an interesting article to write because I stumbled on some things that I’ve never done in my career while doing the research. I may write an article about some of the things I saw, but this post is about one that stuck out to me because I feel like it’s a lost art.
Taking the initiative is something that I feel like I’ve done throughout my career, regardless of the job I was doing. I didn’t have to be asked to do something. If I finished my work and there was other work to do, I’d help. If I weren’t sure, I’d ask if there was something I could do to help.
I was having a conversation with someone who hires people, and he was talking about his frustration with staff that don’t take the initiative. He was amazed that there was evident work to be done, and his workers didn’t do anything until they were told to. He confirmed what I wrote in that career advice article, employers value employees that take the initiative.
If you want to impress your boss or your clients, take the initiative. If you’ve ever experienced someone taking the initiative on something you’ve asked them to do, you know how nice it feels to have someone go above and beyond what you asked for. You probably remember the names of the people who have taken the initiative in work done for you.
Taking the initiative makes you stand out from your colleagues and creates an excellent reputation with the people you work for. You never know who can open up doors for you for your business or career. When you take the initiative, and people remember you for what you’ve done, you’ll be top of mind for the next job or business opportunity that comes their way.
Let go of the attitude that you don’t do things that aren’t in your job description. Doing the minimum doesn’t get you noticed. Exceeding expectations makes the difference and leaves a mark in people’s minds. The next time you get an opportunity to go beyond what you’re asked to do, take the initiative. You’ll be glad you did. ♥
