The truth about happy endings

September 5, 2021 Sandra Dawes

I watched a movie a few days ago. It started dark, then it looked like things were picking up, and it would end well. Then things took a sharp left, and I was left feeling sad because the movie gave you hope that there would be a happy ending, and then it wasn’t.

I commented that I was disappointed by the way the movie ended, and my husband commented that it might be disappointing, but he felt it was pretty realistic.

I won’t ruin the movie by giving you its name, but if you’ve ever watched the show Intervention, then you know the heartbreak of watching someone struggle, seeing them start to become hopeful, and then reverting to bad habits.

I don’t know what it is, but I love cheering for an underdog. I like to cheer them on even when the odds seem stacked against them. Maybe that’s because I feel like I’ve been in that position before and know I may be there again one day. I think I need to be reassured that regardless of how tough things may be, there’s always hope that things can get better.

I consider myself a realist more than an optimist, but when I find myself disappointed when the ending isn’t a good one, I realize that I’m more of an optimist than I thought.

Regardless of how bad things might get, I think that we get through it by staying optimistic and hoping that things can and will get better. The key is to remember that we don’t have control over how quickly things will get better or how smooth the journey will be.

Real happy endings aren’t made of the stuff of fairy tales. The conclusions will be positive, but the journey there won’t necessarily be happy. You can feel as if you’ve been through a battle, and you just might have. It’s essential to accept that it’s not about how rough the journey was but about where you are, and the person you became once the journey is over. ♥
