Possibility Thinking versus Realistic Thinking

September 4, 2016 Sandra Dawes

Have you ever shared your dreams with someone who suggested that maybe you should be more realistic about your ambitions? Maybe those aren’t the exact words they used. Perhaps they suggested that pursuing your goals isn’t very responsible. Or they quoted statistics on failure rates to give you a realistic view of just how good your chances are of achieving our goals.

The truth is that realistic thinking doesn’t serve us in the achievement of our goals. If we are looking for reasons why what we want can’t happen, we will always find them. Excuses for inaction are easy to find, we don’t need others to help us with that.

If realistic thinking means that we don’t take action because “it’s never going to happen anyway”, then what would thinking that anything is possible lead to? If we are motivated and inspired to take action by thinking about all that is possible for our lives, by thinking about what life could be like if our dreams really could become a reality, then why wouldn’t we choose to think that way instead? Unfortunately many of us don’t think that we have a choice. We believe that we have to be realistic.

If you’ve been stuck thinking realistically, ask yourself what you would do differently if your actions were guided by thoughts of what is possible? Instead of thinking that your goals aren’t realistic and feeling trapped in your current situation, consider that your goals are possible and act on thoughts of that instead. Would you go back to school? Start a business? Learn a new language? Whatever action it is you would take, don’t you think you’d feel better taking action and making progress, no matter how small it may be, rather than continue to remain stuck?

With God, anything is possible. I don’t believe that you have to follow any specific religion in order to feel comforted by this. It takes faith to believe in the infinite possibilities that are out there instead of thinking that what is at the moment is all there is. I feel like I’ve said this in another post, but I think it’s worth saying again: we are given dreams to show us what’s possible. It’s up to us to choose whether or not we’re willing to do the work to see them through to reality.

Will you choose to be a realistic thinker or a possibility thinker? The choice is yours. ♥
