The Article That Started It All

July 4, 2026 Sandra Dawes

Back in 2012, a friend of mine became the editor for a local magazine that is distributed at bus stops in publication boxes for free (the same place you can find rental and car magazines). I had already started my life coaching practice by then, and she asked me to write an article for the magazine.

I said, “Sure,” and then asked what she wanted me to write about. She said I could write about anything, so I wrote about what was on my mind, which you can read here.

Diversity Magazine published the article in the January/February 2013 edition, with Howie Mandel on the cover.

I think I still have physical copies in storage in Canada.

Imagine my surprise when readers of the article contacted me via my website and social media to thank me for sharing my experiences because they had just lost someone in their lives. I even met with sisters at a dessert spot in Toronto, where we spent hours talking after one sister read my article and shared it with her sister, who had recently lost their mother.

The gratitude people expressed after reading a two-page article made me wonder what was possible if I wrote a book about it. Biting the bullet and investing in myself before I wrote a word of the book has been one of the best decisions of my life, and now I’m finishing up my third book with plans to revise and expand that first book.

Reflecting on the past week inspired me to write a thank-you note to the friend who ignited my inner author back in 2012. Who knows what I’d be doing if my friend hadn’t asked me to write the first article? 🤔🩵
