Last week, I read an article about what inspired E. B. White to write Charlotte’s Web. It’s a book dear to my heart since it was one of the first novels I read as a child. I didn’t know that it was a sign of things to come.
A few days later, our dogs were going crazy barking at the fence. When I went outside to see what the fuss was, imagine my surprise to see a pig! There’s an unfenced pumpkin patch on the land in front of our house, and that’s what the pig was after.
He’s been back several times, much to our dog’s chagrin. There’s not much we can do to stop him from visiting. I think everyone believes pigs don’t like noise, so we’re the noisiest bunch when we see him coming.
Clearly, Sheara and Shearni don’t appreciate the visits. Both dogs are quite antisocial toward other animals. Whether it’s a cow, goats, a mongoose, or a cat, they put up a fuss at the sight or sound of them. That means it’s never a dull moment when we’re surrounded by farmland.
Apparently, the grower of the pumpkin patch has spoken with the owner of the pig, and we shouldn’t be seeing any more of the pig I now refer to as Wilbur. It’s probably for the best, since I don’t know where his “Charlotte” could plead his case with her webs.
