Heeding advice

May 2, 2026 Sandra Dawes

When I first started working on my latest book, I would edit myself after I wrote each chapter. It’s the process I used while working on the first three chapters for a contest submission. While I was in the process, I questioned myself about whether it was the best approach.

According to something I read this week (my apologies for not remembering the source), I should focus on writing the first draft before I edit. I laughed when I read it, since it confirmed something that my instincts had already hinted at. The first draft doesn’t have to be perfect; it simply needs to be completed.

I’ve realized that editing each chapter as I write slows my momentum and often disrupts the flow. Instead of saving me time, editing as I go was slowing me down and messing with my creativity.

Taking that advice had allowed me to complete another eight chapters. I’m now working on chapter 12, and the outline I’m working with has 16, as I mentioned in last week’s post, with the potential for an epilogue.

I’m realizing that, although this will be my third book, I still have a lot to learn about being an effective storyteller. I’m excited to continue learning about my craft so that each book I write will be an improvement on the last, even if the subject matter is completely different.

Sharpening my writing skills is a must, since just this week someone approached me about writing another book! I’m looking forward to continuing to share stories that readers can enjoy! 😊
