Mission Complete!

March 28, 2026 Sandra Dawes

I’ve managed to get to my word count a few days before the deadline to submit my entry for the Novel Beginnings Contest ProWritingAid is running. Regardless of whether I win, I’m glad that the contest pushed me to write the first three chapters of my next book.

For some reason, I need deadlines to push me to get a project done. I wanted my first book to be available by Christmas, so I needed to have the first draft completed by the end of August. When I wrote my second book, I had to submit it by the end of August again (2024, with the first in 2013).

This deadline isn’t in August, but I’m glad to have written my submission with time to spare to edit and make sure it’s the best version I can submit.

Like the contest I entered for my second book, winning the contest would be a bonus, but completing the book is the goal. The contest works as a motivation to get me started. Once I get started, I need little to finish. I don’t like leaving projects incomplete.

I’m looking forward to finishing this book. My goal is to complete it by the end of the summer. It would be nice to have it done before the one-year anniversary of Melissa’s unwelcome visit.

ChatGPT has designed a book cover that I’m using as another means of inspiration to complete the book. I’m not a book cover designer, and I know my graphic design person would like a crack at the book cover, and I’d like to give it to him, since I really like the cover he designed for my second book about my dog.

I’m off to have my computer read the first three chapters to me again, so I can catch any edits I’ve missed before I submit my entry on Monday (a day before the deadline). I’m eager to finish my third book so I can begin the fourth one, which is already in the works.
