Time flies when you’re not paying attention

February 14, 2026 Sandra Dawes

It’s funny how time flies, regardless of how much fun you’re having. A few weeks ago, I was talking to a friend, and she said she’d be celebrating her 25th wedding anniversary this year. I was a bridesmaid in her wedding, and I was momentarily surprised by the passage of time.

My dad passed away in 2004, so I often think about events in terms of whether he was around or not. When it was twenty years since he passed, I remember thinking about a friend’s son who was born the same day, and thought, “Holy Crap! That means he’s 20 years old now!”

It’s the same when you haven’t seen a child for a long time. I always think that babies and preteens are the best measure of time. I’m always amazed at the changes kids can go through in a month, never mind six, or an entire year!

I laugh thinking about it. When I was a kid, I’d roll my eyes every time someone commented on how grown-up I was, thinking, “You just saw me a couple of months ago.” I get it now, and I have to catch myself from saying the corny things people used to say to me growing up.

Our dogs were weighed for the first time this week during a vet check-up. The puppies we could once easily carry in our hands are 49 and 69 pounds at just over a one-year old. We have to look at pictures of when we first got them to remember how small they were. The now 49-pound female could once fit through a square in our fence with ease, and the now-69-pound male could fit with a struggle.

Every time the vet sees the dogs, she comments on how big they’re getting, but we don’t notice it because it happens gradually each day.

We’re halfway through February today, and a week and two days from my birthday. When I look at old photos of me as a kid, it’s hard to believe that I was once that edition of myself, and it just reinforces that time really does fly when you’re focused on other things.
