It took almost three months after Hurricane Melissa hit Jamaica. I’m grateful the shop withstood the worst of the storm, but it had the battle scars to show it had seen better days.
The first time I walked into the shop after the storm, I felt like I had vertigo. Everything felt off balance, and the storm had removed the concrete structure that provided a stable foundation for the turntables.
The artwork that had once faced the beach no longer existed, and the shop name at the entrance had also taken leave.
I’m thankful we had emptied the shop, knowing the storm was coming. We saved our inventory from being covered in sand and water that seeped in during the storm.
It took a couple of days to clean up after the structural work was complete, and another couple to lay out the inventory and get ready for the reopening that took place yesterday.
I’m glad to have the shop back up and running, and I’m looking forward to working with a new team since Greggo’s is taking over the kitchen at Lashings as of February 1st.
The shop operations may have been on pause for a while, but we’re ready to begin a new chapter in 2026! 🩵
