Connecting with nature …

December 29, 2025 Sandra Dawes

It’s crazy, all the things you have to deal with after a hurricane. There are the power outages, the water issues, and bloodthirsty mosquitoes to keep things interesting. 😩

Besides the issues mentioned above, our washing machine needs a new transmission, which we only discovered when we got the solar power installed. Thankfully, we found a serviceman to repair it. 🙏🏽

The other evening, our dogs were sniffing around one of the barrels we have outside to collect water. At first, I thought it was the lizard I could see on the cover of the barrel that was bothering them. The lizard left, and they were still obsessed with the barrel. 🤔

I decide to join the investigation and walk towards the barrel. As I get closer, I can hear a noise. When I shift the barrel, I see an unidentifiable creature (it was dark), and now I’m worried about the dogs. I tell them to get behind me, and I call my husband, Satnam, to check the situation while I keep the dogs safe.

Would you believe it was a healthy-sized blue crab? It scoured across the land and went on the other side of our fence. We asked a neighbour how it was possible for a crab to end up where it did, and we were told that with all the rain, sea creatures are ending up in places they wouldn’t normally.

The multiple crocodile sightings after the hurricane clearly show that the hurricane displaced wildlife, and now they are trying to return to their familiar ground.

We continue to be surprised by our experiences with nature. Whether it’s baby frogs hopping around in the house, big frogs in the yard, mongooses, stray dogs and cats, there’s no escaping connecting with nature here. 🩵
