Crazy times

September 20, 2025 Sandra Dawes

As I may have mentioned before, I’m a fan of American late-night television. I avoid watching the news, but late-night TV gives me a glimpse into what’s happening in the world, presented with humour rather than doom and gloom.,

I was saddened to hear that Stephen Colbert’s show was cancelled a few weeks ago, and now Jimmy Kimmel’s show is suspended indefinitely. 😕

I’m glad I’m not inundated with Canadian or American news right now. I think it would be depressing to hear what’s happening to our ability to share our thoughts and beliefs (regardless of how erroneous they may be).

Call me crazy, but I enjoy talking to people who don’t share the same views as I do. It’s the only way to discuss, share and understand (not necessarily agree) other viewpoints. Do I think that there should be consequences for untruths shared with malicious intent? Absolutely.

Unfortunately, the many shades of grey have been slowly eliminated, and more of the world is seeing issues in concrete black or white colours (which I think is unreasonable and unrealistic).

I remain hopeful that those who can do something are doing what they can to slow things from rolling down a very slippery slope. While I don’t watch the news, I’d rather know that a show has a political bias than be controlled entirely by the government.

It’s a scary time when the government wants to punish comedians sharing their opinions using humour. There are comedians I’m not fond of, so I don’t watch their material. Simple.

These days, you have a pretty good idea of what you’re getting depending on the show you watch. If it’s not your cup of tea, find something else to watch, rather than watch and be offended.

If you can’t find anything to watch that shares your point of view, then that sounds like a YOU problem. 🤷🏽‍♀️
