Enjoying quieter times

July 19, 2025 Sandra Dawes

A year ago, we were over two weeks into the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl. We didn’t have power, but at that time, we didn’t know it would be another six weeks before things were back online.

It was a hectic time when we were buying ice to keep what we had in the fridge from spoiling, and storing it in coolers. We were taking water from the tank located below our back porch to flush toilets and using bottled water for bathing. Needless to say, I’m happy we aren’t dealing with any of that this summer.

I should be adding “yet” to that last sentence, but I don’t want to challenge the powers that be. We’re at the start of hurricane season, and anything is possible (but I’d like to sit this season out, please, and thank you).

Instead of the rain that was prevalent last summer, things are very dry and windy. Whenever I hang clothes on the line these days, I have to check that they haven’t blown off constantly. I need to wash the curtains frequently because the air blowing through the windows carries dust. 😕

I’m not complaining about any of it. I appreciate the wind, even when it comes with a bit of dust, and the lack of rain has kept the mosquitoes quiet. After last year’s 2-month day camp, I’m grateful for running water and the ability to do laundry whenever I need to.

It’s funny how an experience like Beryl encourages gratitude for the little things (that become big things when you have to do without) 😩

I’m watching Mr. Weatherman vigilantly, keeping informed on the weather so I know what’s coming or not coming our way. He was on point during Beryl, and he hasn’t let me down yet. 😉

Next month will be a year since I released Lulu: Adventures in a Dog’s Life! I’m reminded of the challenges I had submitting it for the Amazon UK contest, thanks to having to hunt for an internet connection. The experience also reminds me of what I can accomplish in challenging times. 🩵
