Community grief

April 5, 2025 Sandra Dawes

We attended a memorial for a woman who passed away a couple of weeks ago. She and her husband were on a scooter when a drunk driver hit them. She died on the scene, and the husband is back in Canada getting medical care.

The accident has been a reality check for everyone here. People have come together to support each other as they grieve the loss of a couple who has been coming to the area for over a decade.

One person who gave a tribute during the memorial reminded attendees that regular visitors like himself and the couple involved in the accident are more than tourists in the area; they’re part of the community.

This isn’t the first time in the two years (almost) that we’ve been here that we’ve seen the community come together. When hurricane Beryl hit in July 2024, the community banded together to support those in need.

While I didn’t know the couple personally, I’d seen them at the restaurant where the shop is and had small talk with them. It’s sad to know that we’ll never have those times again.

Moments like these remind us not to take life for granted because anything can happen anytime. Don’t put things off, assuming you’ll have time to do them. Do them now. Tell people you love them, take that course, or start the workout routine you’ve been putting off because you don’t have time. Make the time.

It’s unfortunate that it often takes grief to remind us of the essential things. I know that every time something like this happens, I swear I will be more aware and grateful for every day, but then life happens, and I revert to my old habits.

Instead of promising myself that I’ll be better, I will simply do better. 🩵
