This week, reality checked my mindset. I mistakenly assumed that events in the country I’m living in are organized like they were back home. They aren’t.
Once I overcame the disappointment, I realized there was no reason I should have assumed things would be the way they are in Canada because so many of our experiences in our new home wouldn’t be a reality there.
I thought I was adapting well, but some of my experiences here are frustrating. I must remind myself that I knew things wouldn’t be the same as living in a new country, which was part of the motivation to move. We were looking for a change.
I have to remind myself about all the positive things I’ve experienced living here. There’s no shovelling snow or driving on icy roads, and I can pick tropical fruit from a local tree. We actually have our first pineapple growing in our yard!

Between our first pineapple (a plant given to us by a friend in Kingston) and two different types of mango trees, a breadfruit tree and avocado trees, our farm is off to a great start. 😉
This disappointment hit me hard because I have been waiting for this event to happen for two years now. Realizing that my chances of participating were always slim to none is disheartening.
The situation has sparked an idea in my head, and I’m not sure what I’ll do with it yet. I’ve never considered myself a disrupter, but I’m wondering if I’m the only one who’s experienced disappointment with this and if there’s an opportunity to fill the gap to meet the needs of people like me.
I’m not sure what I’m going to do yet. I know that the disappointment I experienced means that something better is on the horizon. At this point, I’m unsure if I’m supposed to create that “something better” or focus on my writing and wait for it to come.
For now, I will continue reading and planning my next project. I’m sure the answers will come to me as I quiet my mind and revel in not being in “Kansas” anymore. 🩵
