I’ve decided to start reading again while I’m at the shop, and things are slow. The shop’s been open for almost two months now, and I feel like I’m getting used to the flow of what needs to be done when people are visiting the shop.
I’ve downloaded a few books that I bought years ago but haven’t read yet. I started one of them, and I’m grateful Kindle remembers where I left off, though I think I may need to go back and refresh my memory on what I covered already.
Reading motivates me to write. When I read a book that inspires me to think about things differently, I think about how I can do the same in my writing.
I don’t remember the movie, but there was a movie I watched years ago about a young man who wanted to write. His mentor told him that if you want to be a good writer, you have to read a lot of books.
I don’t know if that’s the only way to become a good writer, but I know that the books I’ve read throughout my life have shaped my writing. The only genre that hasn’t influenced the writing I do know is horror. There was a time in my life when I was addicted to reading anything Stephen King wrote.
One of these days, I think I’ll write a blog post about why I was so fascinated with horror movies and books for a certain period of my life. I’m not a psychiatrist, but I think I’ve figured out why it happened and why it’s not a genre I have any interest in now.
The books I’ve downloaded so far are nonfiction, but I’d like to add some fiction this year. I’ve already set a goal to have a first draft of my third book complete before the year ends, so I need to get started. Starting my reading practice is the warmup I need to get inspired. 🩵
