Preparing for Beryl

July 1, 2024 Sandra Dawes

Beryl may be our first hurricane since we moved to the Caribbean. We knew the possibility of experiencing a hurricane when we moved to the tropics. I’ve been watching the weather for the last week.

I’ve been watching Mr. Weatherman on YouTube and appreciate his videos. He advises people to prepare for the impending tropical storms, island by island, and he’s been pretty accurate so far. He shows viewers various computer models, so we know the different possibilities as each storm approaches.

Since we’ve never experienced a hurricane before, we are taking advice from locals who have lived through a tropical storm or many storms in their lifetime.

We’ve heard that we should expect power outages when the storm hits on Wednesday, which means not doing massive grocery shopping for items that need to be refrigerated or frozen. We stocked up on water and had candles and a kerosene lamp for light.

We have a solar battery pack to help us keep our phones charged should the power go out. Who knows if the phone lines will endure any storm we experience?

I have some things that I can work on offline, should that be necessary. Based on the intermittent power and internet with our storms, I’m sure we will have some time without power. They may turn off the power grid in preparation for the storm; I guess only time will tell.

I’m taking any time without power or the internet as a blessing. Maybe it will give us a well-needed break from all the distractions these conveniences offer us.

I’m sure next week’s blog post will report on my first hurricane experience. Should the storm miss us, I’m more than happy to have an uneventful report to give.
