Surrendering to Mother Nature

June 12, 2024 Sandra Dawes

Living on an island comes with many adjustments. One of them, for me, is not having a clothes dryer because who wants a heat-creating appliance in a tropical country?

Not having a dryer means coordinating laundry day with the weather forecast. While there are many weather apps, I’ve found that the Google forecast I get on my phone is usually pretty accurate. Until this today.

Usually, when the forecast says there’s a 19% chance of rain, you can expect not to see any. I decided to do laundry today since the chance of rain was 9%. I had bed linens for both bedrooms, which took up most of the line. Right after I finished hanging the sheets, rain started to come.

Tropical rain doesn’t usually last long, and I already had another load in the washer, so I left the clothes on the line. As expected, the rain didn’t stay, and I managed to dry the top sheets and the pillowcases. After I hung up the second load, the rain returned harder this time.

I felt hopeless as the almost dry things on the line got soaked, and the stuff I just hung up did an unexpected rinse cycle. 😫

Since I don’t have space inside to hang things up, I decided to leave everything outside and hoped I didn’t have to wait for tomorrow for the sun to come out (singing an Annie remix in my head about the sun coming out in an hour 😉).

It’s been a couple of hours, and the rain has stopped; I figure that I can take stuff off in the next hour and hang up the things I have left. I’m glad I continued going, even when it looked like my laundry day would be rained out.

There was a time when things like this would have ruined my day. I’m happy that I’ve learned not to allow things out of my control to affect my mood or motivation. Thankfully, I don’t have to worry about my growth being tested by the appearance of snow anytime soon. ❤️
