Reflections on the past year

June 4, 2024 Sandra Dawes

Last week marked a year since I left Canada. It’s a perfect example of the illusionary nature of time; in some ways, it feels like a lifetime ago, and in others, it feels like just yesterday. Regardless, the past year has been an interesting journey.

We’ve met and connected with lots of interesting people and, unfortunately, have experienced difficult ones. Thankfully, the highs have outnumbered the lows, and we’ve never thought we made the wrong choice in choosing our new home country.

When we go back to Canada to visit (twice within the first year), we never feel like we miss it. I think it makes the time spent with friends and family more special than the visits we would have when we were local.

One of the silver linings to being apart from friends and family for an extended period is that it puts things in perspective. Since our time together is limited, we don’t waste time with things that don’t matter, and that’s beautiful.

I’ve been writing more for myself since I’ve been here. I’ve finally come to the realization that I don’t need to make up stories to be a good storyteller. As I did in my book Embrace Your Destiny: 12 Steps to Living the Life You Deserve, I can tell stories based on my own experiences. 😊

I have two books in the works at the moment. I’ve completed a first draft and want to review it to see if there’s anything else to add. The second book is in the works, and I’m excited to see what stories I share in that one.

Our first year in our new home was a great one. We accomplished a lot and are on our way to getting ourselves fully settled. I’m excited to see what our second year brings! ❤️
