Practicing mindfulness

November 4, 2023 Sandra Dawes

Last Monday was an accident-prone day. I’m naturally clumsy, but typically, I don’t have multiple accidents on the same day, but that day was different.

Honestly, both events happened because I was going through the motions and not paying attention to what could go wrong. The first accident occurred when I poured hot water from the kettle into the French press for the morning’s coffee. Most of the hot water ended up on my hand and not in the French press.🫢

After soothing the burn with ice, we decided to go to the beach. I was happy to soothe my burns in the ocean. Typically, I would be easing the itch from mosquito bites, but we bought a zapper from Amazon when we were traveling, and it seems to be doing the trick. 😉

Later that day, we decided to make pizza for dinner, and it was going well until I figured it was time to take it out of the oven. Instead of finding something to stabilize the pizza, I thought I’d balance it on my kitchen towel-covered arm.

On my way to the counter, cheese from the pizza slipped off and ended up in the palm of my hand. 🥵Needless to say, it took two bowls of ice to soothe the burning sensation this time, and my husband asked me what was going on because I was off.

Coming back from our 30-day trip had me a bit frazzled. There was a lot I wanted to do, lots that needed to get done, and I felt like I needed a rest from the month of travel we returned from, but that wasn’t an option.

After fracturing my ankle in 2022, I committed to be more mindful about my movements. I guess that mindfulness needs to extend beyond the steps I take and get integrated into all the actions I initiate.

I’m at a point in my life where I’m in more control of my time, and I think I need to remind my brain that not everything has to be done in a rush. I don’t have to be “at work” at a particular time, nor do I have to eat on a schedule.

The slow pace of life here can be frustrating when you want to get things done but welcoming when it comes to everything else. Something that would have taken me an entire day before now gets accomplished in half the time.

Less distractions, less noise, less pressure, less stress. Those ingredients should foster mindfulness if I’m aware of my surroundings, so that’s what I’m committing to doing moving forward. ❤️
