Starting a new chapter

April 24, 2023 Sandra Dawes

When I was younger, I always imagined my older self living somewhere other than Canada. Back then, I had dreams of studying in England. Fast-forward 30-plus years, and now I’m packing up to relocate, not to the UK, but to a tropical island.

If you had told me ten years ago that we’d be making this move, I would have laughed and said it sounded like a pleasant dream. Ten years ago, I quit my job as an Executive Director of a non-profit to write my first book and focus my time and energy on my coaching practice.

I wasn’t gone from the non-profit for very long before I returned to fill in for my replacement, who had taken stress leave. I was there for six years as a contract worker, which meant I had flexibility with my schedule, which I had grown to appreciate.

The pandemic gave me my way out of the work with the non-profit. I had become disillusioned with the coaching industry and no longer wanted to focus my time and energy there. I decided to test the waters of making another dream come true, and I started applying for freelance writing jobs. About five years ago, I remembered saying at a networking event that I’d be a happy girl if I could get paid to write.

Now, here we are, three years after walking away from my coaching practice, I’m a staff writer for MakeUseOf.com, and I do freelance writing whenever the opportunity presents itself. The beautiful thing is I can do my work from anywhere, as long as I have an internet connection.

What seemed impossible ten years ago is now possible. I’m constantly reminded that it’s about focusing on what you want and letting the how reveal itself. I’m excited to see what this new chapter brings. I know there will be challenges, but I believe we have the mindset to deal with whatever comes our way. ❤️
