Appreciating the silence

February 11, 2023 Sandra Dawes

Sometimes I like to work with music playing in the background, and other times I find it distracting. I guess it’s the nature of the work I’m doing that determines whether I want music playing.

It’s funny how I could do my homework with the television on when I was in high school. I wouldn’t pay attention to what was happening on the TV; I just wanted the background noise while working, and it would drive my parents crazy since they couldn’t see how I could work like that.

I guess I’ve changed with age. 😲 Now, I do my best work in silence. If I’m working on a project for myself, I may choose to play some music to put me in the right headspace.

As life has become noisier, I’m learning to appreciate the silence and not feel I need to fill every space with sound. The only sound I’m hearing as I write this post is the sound of the keys my fingers are clicking (and a washing machine running in the background 😉).

Recently, I’ve been spending my alone time catching up with friends and getting work done. I could watch TV. I haven’t touched Netflix in months, and I don’t think I’ll be watching the Super Bowl tomorrow. I love my moments of silence and feel like it’s a mediation on its own.

I enjoy continuing to learn more about myself. I realize now that my preference to work on my own is partly due to being able to work in silence if I want to. In an office setting, you can’t control all the noise that may be around you.

This isn’t to say that I don’t enjoy noise sometimes. I have moments when I’m driving where I crank up the radio and sing along to my favourite songs or do the same thing at home. I go to concerts and every once in a while go to a venue where they play loud music.

I do enjoy noise sometimes. Sometimes I can’t escape it (like when the neighbours play loud music late at night). I’ll also never say no to turning everything off and simply sitting in silence. ❤️
