Keeping hope alive

May 23, 2021 Sandra Dawes

Hope. When we’re at our lowest, it can be hard to think about. Everything feels hopeless. It can be hard to hear people talking about having faith and hoping that things will get better. When you’re going through your dark night of the soul, it can feel like things will never improve. You believe that happiness will remain something you experienced once, and it will never happen again.

If you’ve been through a time in your life when things seemed hopeless, and you made it through to the other side – Congratulations! I know the struggle those rough patches can be, but I also know the relief I’ve felt when things started to get better. That’s the thing to always remember: they can get better no matter how hard things get.

It’s easy to say when you’re at a point in your life where things are on the upswing, and even when you may have plateaued. Hearing cliches like, “this too shall pass” can seem empty when you’re experiencing the darkness. The good news is that there is a way out of that darkness when you’re ready.

If you’re not sure where to start on your journey to re-establishing a relationship with hope, you have to want things to get better and be willing to take action to make it happen. Saying that you want to be more positive and hopeful about the future without doing anything about it is futile.

Remember what it was like the last time you felt hopeful about something. What were you doing? Who were you with? These are the things you need to recall and find a way to recreate to find a way to be more hopeful. Do you have people in your life who always seem to cheer you up? Maybe it’s time to book a time to chat with them.

It’s amazing how the people we spend the most time with can affect the way we approach our lives. If the people in your inner circle are all going through things that are causing them to lose faith and become more negative, you have to find other people to connect with. This isn’t about abandoning them. It’s about taking care of yourself so that you can help them.

One of the best ways to reconnect with hope is to do a gratitude journal. If you don’t already have one, you can download a free copy of mine here. I used to do a yoga video where the instructor was Patricia Moreno; every week, I would hear her remind me that gratitude is the greatest multiplier of good when I would do yoga with her. It served as a great reminder to take time out to express gratitude regularly.

Having hope is important. We have to believe that we can change our circumstances. We’re never stuck, and we aren’t doomed to a certain fate because something negative happened to us. I believe that everything happens for a reason, and that allows me to have faith even when things don’t go the way I wanted them to.

Resisting what is, means that we don’t have faith that everything is happening for our highest good. We have to have hope that things can get better regardless of what our present looks like. Anything can happen can at any time. It’s up to us to be ready for it. Having hope gives us the strength to persevere even when we’re at our darkest because we trust the light is coming. Are you ready? ♥
