Plan to succeed in 2020

December 6, 2020 Sandra Dawes

Let’s be honest, 2020 has been a year of adapting. Things are not what they were a year ago. Whether you’re living through a lockdown right now or not, your way of life has changed significantly since this time last year.

With all of the unexpected changes that have occurred since early 2020, the plans we set for this year had to be adjusted in some way or another. It meant having meetings via Zoom or another web-based platform, you and your family working from home and for some of us it meant hunting for toilet paper 😉

Some of us may have thrown the plan out of the window early on in the year. If your plans were based on large events with high attendance numbers then a change of plan was definitely needed. A colleague of mine that runs business seminars and expos made the change to hosting events virtually and has had success this year when others have struggled to make the shifts necessary to succeed.

If there’s anything that I’ve learned in the pursuit of my goals, it’s that things don’t always go according to plan. There’s going to be a time when we have to look for an alternate path to get us where we’re working to get to. I have often compared the journey to making our goals happen, to a road trip. Just because the path you mapped out isn’t available anymore, that doesn’t mean you have to make a u-turn and head back home, it means that you have to look for another way to get to the final destination.

2020 can leave us feeling like making a plan is a waste of time because there will always be things that happen that are out of our control. I don’t believe that this is true. I believe that a plan is necessary. It serves as a guide to the actions we need to take to get us where we want to go. The unexpected is always going to happen. We have to prepare ourselves for the reality of the unexpected happening.

There’s a quote that says that if you’re failing to plan you’re planning to fail. Again using the road trip analogy, you don’t start the trip without thinking about the route you’re going to take. Whether you’re using a paper map or a GPS, you need to know where you’re going and the path ahead. Without a plan, you don’t have any idea of how far you’ve gone and the distance left to go.

If you’re ready to create your plan for 2021, I’d like to invite you to join me in attending my Jump Start Your Year workshop. For more information and to save your spot, visit https://jumpstartyouryearonline.paperform.co/. ♥
