Feel it in your heart

November 30, 2020 Sandra Dawes

I feel like a lot of my blog posts this year have been inspired by the things I have watched on Netflix. 😉 This week’s blog post is brought to you by the inspiration I received from Voices of Fire. This show features the building of a gospel choir consisting of singers from all walks of life, regardless of their beliefs.

I’m not a religious person by any means. I haven’t been to church for more than a funeral or a wedding in a long time. That doesn’t mean, however, that I am not moved by gospel music. I don’t know what it is about gospel music, but it moves me in a way that other music doesn’t. I remember being at my father’s funeral and singing a hymn right before I was supposed to deliver his eulogy. I remember being moved to tears and thinking there was no way that I was going to be able to keep it together for the eulogy and then just as the song was done, I felt ready to do what needed to be done.

It was interesting to see how some of the candidates treated their auditions. It’s amazing how powerful the performances were when the song they sang had a special meaning to them. When they connected with the lyrics in a meaningful way they delivered a powerful performance that moved the judges as well. I’ll be the first to admit that I shed a few tears watching the performances.

I have realized that there is magic that happens when you connect with the work that you’re doing in a meaningful way.  When I’m asked to write something that I don’t connect with deeply, it doesn’t come easily. Don’t get me wrong, I can do it – it’s just not going to flow in the way that it does when the subject matter touches my heart.

This blog post is happening because I watched a program that moved me. It inspired me to write about the thoughts that came to mind while I was taking the program in. I was motivated by the performances of the potential choir members. It’s beautiful to hear stories of people overcoming struggles of some sort and how they’ve used those experiences to deliver a performance that touches the audience.  There’s something to be said for working from the heart. When was the last time you were inspired to act from the heart? ♥
