Choosing courage over comfort

September 14, 2020 Sandra Dawes

Last week I watched Brene Brown’s film A Call to Courage. I have read and listened to a few of her books and as a fellow introvert, I always seem to connect with the message she’s sharing. I have had moments of courage in my life, but I’ve also had moments where I have chosen comfort over courage because it felt safer.

If you haven’t watched the film yet, I highly recommend it. This post isn’t a review of the film. It’s more of a “here’s what I got from it.” 😉 I’m feeling challenged to quit taking a break on doing courageous things and keep pushing myself. Like I said in one of my recent posts, it’s easy to come up with excuses, but they don’t ever really get you where you want to go, do they?

When was the last time you challenged yourself? If you’re challenging yourself right now, then keep rocking on! 🙂 If it’s been a while since you stretched yourself, perhaps it’s time to ask yourself why that is. There are times when it can feel like our work is never done, and that’s because it isn’t. That doesn’t mean we can’t or shouldn’t take breaks. Taking a break to rest and recharge is a necessary part of the process. If we want different things for our lives, however, the work must go on. We can’t just hope, pray and set intentions, action is a necessary part of the equation.

I’m sure you’ve heard it said that the magic happens when you step outside your comfort zone. I’m pretty sure I’ve said that in talks and presentations. As maddening as it can be to hear that when stepping outside your comfort zone is scary as hell, it’s the truth. I know this from personal experience and it’s something that I have to remind myself of when I question whether or not to take a leap of faith.

In the film, Brene shares that she tells herself every morning that “today I will choose courage over comfort.” I believe it’s a powerful affirmation and I’m going to create a sign for myself that I see each day and use that as a guide for my actions throughout the day.

We have the power to make different choices in every moment, every day. If courage hasn’t been one of your options lately and you’re feeling restless, maybe it’s time to choose courage over comfort. 🙂
