You always have a choice

July 20, 2020 Sandra Dawes

I’ve been thinking a lot about the choices I’ve made in the past and how they’ve led me to where I am today. Some of them were done consciously, others not so much 😉 Even when I thought I didn’t have a choice, I did. Whether or not I realized it at the time is a completely different story!

I think there was a long time where I thought that my choices has to do only with my actions. It was only when I went down the rabbit hole of personal development that I realized that I could choose my thoughts as well. I remember when I bought the book Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life. I was intrigued by the idea that if I shifted the way I think that my life would change.

Choosing to seek the light in the depths of darkness is a choice, but it isn’t always an easy one. Especially if that isn’t something you’ve done regularly in the past. We have to program ourselves to think differently so that we can make the changes we’d like to see in our lives.

When you’re experiencing negative emotions, you have the choice to find a better feeling thought. This isn’t something we’re taught in school and personally speaking it wasn’t something that I did naturally or easily. When my father died I wallowed in that grief for a very long time. I didn’t want to experience happiness and I didn’t want anyone in my life to either.

It took me a while to realize that if I continued on that path of negativity I was going to alienate the people who cared about me. No one likes to be around someone constantly walking around with a dark cloud over their head for an extended period of time. It was that realization that motivated me to choose to do work on myself so I could figure out what happiness meant to me without my father with me in physical form.

There have been many times in my life where I have said “I don’t have a choice!” I realize now that’s never really the case. Even when the options for action are non-existent, we always have the ability to choose how we feel about what’s going on and that can make a huge difference when it comes to what we do next.

Change your thoughts, change your life – it sounds easier said than done because it is! The truth of the matter is that when you do start to change the way you think life does start to change. You just have to be willing to put in the work to shift your thoughts.

The choice is yours. 😉
