Finding what works for you

January 27, 2020 Sandra Dawes

There are so many ways to do so many things these days! It can be quite overwhelming, especially when you’re feeling stuck and trying to find a way out. If you’re looking to eat healthier and do more exercise, there are probably a million methods all saying that their way gets you the best results! How do you know which one is the right one?

I think it’s always about finding out what works for you. You know yourself best: what is it going to take to stay committed to whatever it is you’re trying to do? For me, it’s all about having a routine and constantly checking in with myself about where I want to be and what I’m doing to get there. When I fall off the daily check-in wagon, things don’t get done when I need them to.

This year, I’ve decided to do more of my work at my desk and less on my laptop in front of the television. I got through most of my academic career with the television as my study buddy, but I’ve realized that something’s gotta give. When I’m into the work I’m doing, I’m missing half of what’s going on in the show I’m watching, and if the show’s too interesting, there isn’t much work getting done. This post is being written while listening to my “Mellow Grooves” playlist on Spotify 😉

I think that it’s important to find a way to do anything we do in a way that feels right to us. Whether that means listening to music, removing distractions or creating systems to get things done more efficiently, the key is that it makes sense to you.

If you’re doing something right now and it doesn’t feel right to you and it isn’t working, then try something different! You don’t have to maintain the status quo if it isn’t working anymore. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. I know how scary it can be, but I also know from lots of different experiences, that it is worth it.

I would caution that as you search to find what works for you to exercise some patience and don’t beat yourself up when things don’t work out the way you expected them to the first time around. Do your research, seek advice from people who have knowledge and expertise in what you’re trying to do, if possible.

My last piece of advice for anyone on the journey to finding out what works for them: don’t listen to the critics. If you find a way to do something, anything – and it makes sense to you? Keep doing it. Don’t worry about the people who don’t understand it, can’t do it or think it’s silly. Do you and let them worry about figuring out what works for them 😉
