The decade in review

January 13, 2020 Sandra Dawes

It may seem like I’m a little late to the party when it comes to writing a blog post about the last decade, but I have a good reason. I’m just getting back to work after a three week holiday which included me getting married! Needless to say, I have had more than the usual reasons for reflection. Not only is the start of a new year and a new decade, it’s the start of a new phase of my life!

A lot has happened in the last decade. On the business front, it saw the start of my coaching practice, facing my fear of public speaking, writing a book and launching a podcast. While I would love to report it’s all been awesome, there have been many lows. I’m grateful that I’ve learned not to take the disappointments personally and to do my best to look for the lesson in the things that feel like mistakes.

On a personal level, some friendships I thought would stand the test of time didn’t, but others developed and were strengthened. There was the passing of loved ones and the births of beautiful babies. My partner for almost 18 years is now my husband.

I feel like the last decade was about building a foundation. In the past few years, there have been a lot of times where the foundation has been tested. It might get shaken up, but it won’t fall apart. It feels good to say that because that isn’t how I’ve always felt!

The biggest lesson I learned in the past 10 years is that amazing things happen when you least expect it! Believe me when I say letting go of expectations has been one of the toughest things I have ever had to practice. When I do let go of the expectation that things have to happen a certain way or at a certain time, I’m always pleasantly surprised when the unexpected happens.

Things don’t happen when we want them to, they happen when they’re meant to.

I’m looking forward to seeing what the decade ahead has in store, aren’t you? 🙂
