The best way to set and achieve goals?

November 4, 2019 Sandra Dawes

I can’t imagine how many books are out there about how to achieve your goals. There are so many different methods out there, each touting that they are the most effective and efficient way to plan your goals and execute them. For every method out there, however, there are those who have tried them and didn’t get the results they wanted.

Part of the reason for this is a lack of commitment. Regardless of the method you use to map out your goals and take action, if you’re not committed to the process, you won’t get the results you’re looking for. Effective goal achievement requires discipline. This is true regardless of what you’re working towards.

If you’re struggling to figure out the best way to achieve a specific goal, think about previous goals that you have accomplished. When you look back at past achievements, take the time to think about what worked and what didn’t. Learn from the things that didn’t work and think about ways to leverage the things that did work.

Accomplishing your goals doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s a simplified breakdown of the steps I use:

  1. Get clear on what you want to achieve and why.
  2. Work your way back from the end goal and map out what you need to do to make it happen.
  3. Be prepared for challenges and obstacles.
  4. Set benchmarks and deadlines to track your progress
  5. Take action on a consistent basis

One of the biggest challenges to goal achievement is our overthinking. We start thinking about everything that could go wrong. Instead of looking for reasons to make it happen, we look for excuses not to do anything. We allow our fears of failure, success, disappointment or the unknown prevent us from creating the life we truly want.

When we want something bad enough, we will find a way to do it, no matter what. We ask for help when we need it, we find the courage to do things we’ve never done before, and we don’t look at obstacles as a sign that what we want isn’t meant to be. That’s why knowing why you want to achieve the goals you are working towards is so important. If you lose sight of why you’re doing the things you’re doing, it’s easy to quit when times get rough.

There is no one perfect way to make your goals a reality. Of course, there are common elements that every person who has achieved their goals has incorporated into the process. They are, to name a few:

  • Persistence
  • Focus
  • Commitment
  • Positive attitude

I think that most of us know what we need to do to make our goals a reality, we just might not be ready to do what it takes. When you are ready, it’s not about finding the perfect method, or waiting for the stars to align in a particular way, it’s just about getting started!
