The importance of a clear vision

September 2, 2019 Sandra Dawes

In most of the talks I give on goals and creating the life you truly want, I discuss the importance of clarity. If you’ve attended any of my webinars or heard me speak in person, you know that I look at the path to achieving our goals like a road trip. We have to be clear on where we’re going so that we can set a route to get us there!

When you know where you’re headed and clear on why it’s important that you get there, then you’re less susceptible to distractions. Sure, and idea might sound cool and exciting, but is it going to get you closer to your vision, or be a distraction from it? If the reason you started on the path to the vision no longer makes sense or doesn’t serve you, then there’s nothing wrong with heading in a different direction. If the vision is still important to you, then quitting or getting pulled off track is not an option and you remain focused on what you want.

I think it’s worth mentioning that clarity on your vision isn’t enough. You have to be willing to do what it takes to make that vision a reality. That may mean becoming more disciplined with how you spend your time, your money or both. It may mean spending time with different people, expanding your circle and at one point or another your comfort zone as well.

The journey to making your vision a reality isn’t going to be without it’s bumps in the road. We have to be prepared for them and have a plan in place for what you’re going to do when they show up. This includes having a strong support system that you can go to when you need some help working though the difficult times. Never forget that you don’t have to do it all on your own! Be willing and able to ask for help when you need it.

There was a long time where my vision was very short-sighted and limited. I didn’t want to dream big or think outside the box because I was worried about setting myself up for disappointment or making a fool of myself. I wasn’t pulled to really thing about how I wanted to live my life until after my dad died. Once I started thinking bigger and doing things that I truly want to do regardless of how crazy it might have once seemed, amazing things have happened.

The vision that I have for my life continues to evolve and change. I feel like the image of that vision is getting into sharper focus. Past experiences and lessons learned have helped me to realize what I want more of and what I can do without. There have been many surprises along the way, things I never imagined I would want and am now grateful that I have in my life.

My advice for anyone who is looking to gain more clarity on their own vision? Dream big, keep an open mind and stay focused on the “what” not the “how”. 🙂
