Set yourself free

August 5, 2019 Sandra Dawes

I’m feeling a little lighter these days and it’s not because I’ve shed any pounds lately (though it something I’m working on). 😉 So what have I done that has me a bit light on my feet these days? I’ve given myself permission to do things that feel right and light me up without inhibition.

It’s easy to sometimes get caught up in doing something because it’s become a habit, and we’re comfortable, rather than because it’s something that truly serves us. There comes a time, however, when even that comfortable habit becomes a cause for discomfort. We’ve all been there, in a situation that many would be grateful for, yet we’re left feeling unsettled.

That unease that we’re feeling is because we’re not in total alignment. We’re not living a life that realizes our fullest potential. We’re not growing, we’re not learning, and we’re not doing things that fulfill our passions.

This isn’t to say that we all need to quit our jobs and do a year long Eat, Pray, Love sabbatical. What I believe it means is that we need to find a way to incorporate our passions into our daily lives. Whether that means taking on a side-project at your job, dedicating time to volunteer or to a hobby, there’s no time like the present to figure out what is going to fill your cup!

Once you realize what you can be doing to feel in more alignment, you’ll be amazed at what happens next. You’ll find time where you once thought there was none. You’ll have more inspiring and motivating conversations with others and ideas will come when you least expect them.

Of course, at the moment I’m talking from my own personal experience. What I can tell you is that it feels like when you’ve been sitting in a car for hours and you park and get out and do that big stretch. Sitting in that car started out comfortable enough, but there came a time when you just needed to get out, stretch and explore.

I think it’s important to do the things that bring you joy. There are always going to be those that don’t understand, those that don’t get it, and that’s got to be okay. It is impossible to keep everyone happy. The happiness of others is not only none of your business, it’s out of your control!

We have to give ourselves permission to do things that bring us joy. It might feel selfish at first, but trust me when I say, the more happiness you bring into your own life, the wider the ripple effect!
