It’s all in my head

“It’s all in my head”, is what I said to my significant other yesterday. He smiled and said, yes it is. Now I was talking about the fact that the flu that kicked my ass on the weekend felt like it had made its home in my head. He was referring to my knack for overthinking and worry. Of course I laughed and said that’s not what I meant (this time).

I have to say that this year I feel like I’ve made progress on my knack for overthinking things and making excuses as to why I can’t do or have the things I want in my life. When Carrie Green announced that she was doing a retreat this year, I made up my mind that I was going before I ever knew the cost. Once I knew how much it was going to cost, I came up with a plan to make it happen.

If there’s one thing that I’ve realized, it’s that we always find a way when we want something bad enough. If you see the value in something and you know that doing it will help you take your life to the next level, why aren’t you doing it? Even if you can’t afford it today, are you putting together a plan to make it happen or have you just resigned yourself to the idea that you’ll never be able to afford it?

There was a time when I didn’t think I was any good at public speaking, or writing, or even networking. I created this story about who I was based on my past. I had to let go of those past experiences and understand that they don’t have to define my future. I had to get out of my head in order to do things that were going to get me where I wanted to go both personally and professionally.

If I hadn’t gotten out of my head, I never would have published my book. Everything was going well until I got to the last chapter because it meant that it would be done and I’d be one step closer to getting it published. I was concerned about how it would be received and how my family would feel about it because there was a lot in there that I never discussed with them. I got over it by reminding myself that if the book helped even one person, it would mean the book was a success.

Spending too much time in your head will destroy your dreams. There’s nothing wrong with thinking about your plan, but you can’t spend too much time planning and not take any action. Nothing’s going to happen if you’re spending all your time thinking about worse case scenarios and what people will think or say. If you have a goal and it really means something to you, it’s time to get take action. Are you ready? ♥
