5 Reasons you should attend a goal setting retreat

October 22, 2016 Sandra Dawes

Okay, so you may think this post is a bit self-serving because I’m hosting a retreat in November, and you’d be right! 😉 Seriously, I am writing this post in the hopes that you’ll consider attending mine, but I also know that everyone can’t make it to mine. I’m sure that there are lots of retreats happening, so it’s really about finding the right one for you! Here’s my list of reasons why you should seriously consider attending a retreat to plan your year:

  1. It’s an opportunity to focus on the plan without distractions
Do you remember the last time that you had a chance to focus on a task without any interruptions? Yeah, it’s been a while for me too! 😉 If your experience has been anything like mine, it’s some of the most productive time ever. Imagine the plan you’ll be able to create in a weekend where you don’t have to worry about making dinner or doing laundry! A retreat weekend is the perfect time to focus on you and what you need to do to make the upcoming year unforgettable.
  1. A group setting means an opportunity to share your goals and get feedback on your plan
Of course, you don’t have to share if you don’t want to, but there’s a lot to be said for getting input from a group of people with varied experiences, skills and expertise. Napoleon Hill said that when two or more or gathered, a mastermind is created. In a retreat setting, you get to take advantage of this mastermind. Imagine what kind of brainstorming can happen in a setting like that!
  1. You’re there, no excuse not to work on the plan
This reason ties into #1. The reality is that life happens. You can have the best intentions to put the tie aside to work on your goals and it still doesn’t happen. If you’ve invested your time and money to attend a retreat, why wouldn’t you do the work you came to do? This is a time to get serious about what you want for your future and really think about the steps needed to get you there.
  1. Your with a group of people working on accomplishing something special too
Everyone at the retreat wants to accomplish something meaningful to them. That’s why they’re there. I love the T.D. Jake’s quotes where he says that “greatness is contagious”. You’re spending the weekend with people who are committing to accomplishing something meaningful in the upcoming year. Being in a space with people who working on plans to do things they haven’t done before can be an amazing motivator as you work towards your own goals!
  1. There’s an opportunity to make some meaningful connections!
After spending a weekend with people where you’ve each been sharing your dreams for the New Year and working on plan on how to make those goals a reality, it’s not surprising that some friendships will be created. Even if you don’t meet your new BFF at the retreat, you’ve now expanded your network. There’s a whole new set of people who know what you’re working towards and may just “know someone” who can help you realize that dream in a way you never imagined.

Retreats are a great experience. I think everyone should attend at least one. There are so many to choose from: yoga retreats, silent retreats, couples retreats and more! Attending a goal setting retreat allows you to set aside the time to work on your goals. You get the opportunity to work on a plan to make those goals a reality. Yes, things don’t always go according to plan. If you don’t have any plan at all, how will you ever know if you’re moving closer or further away from that goal?

Whether you choose to attend a retreat or not, the most important thing is that you take the time to work on your goals. Create a plan, set deadlines and schedule check-ins to measure your progress. Remember, a goal without a plan is just a dream. Are you ready to make your dreams a reality?
