What do you want to be when you grow up?

May 1, 2016 Sandra Dawes

This weekend I watched a video with Idris Elba in it. I’ve included the link because it is definitely worth the watch. In it, he’s asking strangers what they want to be when they grow up. Some laugh, some seem surprised by the question. After a while though, they start to share their dreams.

It can be easy to think that our childhood dreams can never be a reality. We justify not putting much thought into it because it was a childish dream. As adults, some of us believe that we don’t have time to think about what we want to do. We think we’re better off focusing on what we have to do. This video, challenges us to question why we’ve given up on our dreams.

It’s never too late to make our dreams a reality. Whether you want to learn how to play an instrument, write a book or start a business; anything is possible if you want it bad enough! Instead of living life we regret about the things we could have done, or the opportunities we said no to, we need to focus on what we can do today, right now, to make our dreams come true.

The key to realizing our dreams is the belief that they are possible. Without faith that even the seemingly impossible is possible gives us the motivation and inspiration required to persist through any challenge. When we are able to believe in our ability to make our dreams come true, we connect with the people and resources to help us make it so.

Maybe when you were younger, you were told that your dreams for the future weren’t realistic. You might have been advised that no one has ever made money doing what you wanted to do. The other day I met someone who shared their story of a friend who refused to get a 9-5 despite pressure from his family and found a way to make a living selling stuff on e-bay! To me, that’s proof that where there’s a will, there is a way. It’s all about knowing what you want, staying focused, and being open to all the avenues to get you closer to the achievement of your goal.

If we’re not growing, we remain stagnant. Every day is an opportunity to grow into a better version of yourself that you were the day before. It’s never too late to do something new and different. If you’re not feeling fulfilled in your life today, maybe it’s time to ask yourself, “What do I want to be when I grow up.” Once you can answer that, you can develop a plan and take action to make it happen! ♥
