Making time to just be

April 3, 2016 Sandra Dawes

In this time of smartphones and social media, I think that there are many of us who find it hard to just be. There’s so Just Breathe.Just Be.Now.much to do. Busyness has become a badge of honour. Many think that if you’re not busy, if you’re schedule isn’t jam packed, you’re not being productive.

Unfortunately, many of us are busy doing nothing. I’m not saying that we’re simply claiming to be busy while sitting on the couch eating sweet potato chips (my personal snack of choice). What I am suggesting is that we’re busy doing a lot of things and still not actually getting anything meaningful accomplished.

I know there have been times when I felt like I was spinning my wheels in mud. I was busy all the time, but I didn’t feel like I was getting anything done. It’s in times like this, we need to take a step back and really rethink things. When I talk about being, what I’m really talking about is taking time to take a breath. It’s about taking the time to revisit if your motivation is. Do you have a clear goal that you’re working towards, or are you just going through the motions. I find when I’m busy being busy, it’s because I’ve lost sight of the goal, or given up on the original plan without going back and revising it.

Mediation is a great way to just be. Taking the time to quiet the mind has often helped me to find answers that I didn’t even know I was looking for. It removes the anxiousness and anxiety that comes with not feeling like you even have time to think. It’s when you’re feeling like you don’t have the time to sit with your thoughts that you need it the most. Meditation doesn’t have to mean sitting in silence, or chanting “OM”. It’s about focusing on simply being in the present moment. Not doing, simply being. Focus on your breath, quiet the mind and just be here, now.

Here’s the thing – that to do list? It isn’t going to get done any quicker when you’re so overwhelmed that you can’t think straight. Even if you do get some of those tasks done, how many will be done the way that you really want them to be?

Don’t fall into the trap of feeling the need to be busy all the time. Take time to relax, recharge and revisit the plan as much as much as you need to. Being busy isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. There’s a big difference between being busy and being productive. When you give yourself permission to take a break of doing and spend more time being, you’ll be amazed at the difference it makes! ♥
