Definiteness of purpose

February 7, 2016 Sandra Dawes

I’m reading Napoleon Hill’s book Outwitting the Devil and I am getting lots of great nuggets of wisdom. Some of it There is one quality which one must possess to win, and that is definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants, and a burning desire to possess it.reminds me of his book Think and Grow Rich, especially when he talks about definiteness of purpose. I know from personal experience that when we have definiteness of purpose, our goals become a reality.

A few years ago when I was facilitating a mastermind group based on the book Think and Grow Rich. We were reading the book and doing the exercises in the accompanying workbook. One of the first exercises was to create a Statement of Desire. This was about defining your goal and outlining what you were committing to doing to make it happen.

If you don’t believe in the power of writing your goals down, I can tell you that it works! Having that statement of desire on my whiteboard in my bedroom served as a daily reminder of what I was working towards. It was the beginning of a great journey that continues to evolve even now! I left my full-time job, wrote my first book, have had several television appearances and have had the chance to be a speaker at some awesome events!

I’m grateful for the reminder that when we have clear objectives, we can’t help but succeed.  Definiteness of purpose means that you never wake up wondering what you’re going to do today. You have a destination that you are working towards and you’re ready willing and able to do the work consistently to make it happen.

Without purpose we are drifting. We all need something to focus our energy on. When we lack definiteness of purpose, we feel unfulfilled and maybe even bored with life. We weren’t meant to stay stagnant. Your comfort level isn’t supposed to stay static! We need something to light that inner flame. Something that inspires us, something that brings you joy.

I invite you to take the time to write your statement of desire. Get clear on what it is you want and write down at least 4 actions you are committing to taking to get you to that goal. This isn’t about writing your business plan. It’s about stating your intentions and committing to taking action. Once you write it down, post it somewhere where you’ll see it often. You’ll be glad you did! ♥
