5 Reasons Why What You Do Is So Important

August 16, 2015 Sandra Dawes

We all have days that we feel uninspired and unmotivated at work. We sometimes feel like what we do isn’t Quotation-Andy-Andrews-action-family-business-Meetville-Quotes-83007important, or doesn’t make a difference. The reality is that we can’t all work for an NGO in an impoverished part of the world. The truth is that we don’t have to make headlines in order to make a difference. Here are 5 things to consider when you’re having a rough day:

  1. Service

Do you remember the last time someone went above and beyond for you? We remember those instances, even when it’s been years since it happened, because of the way it made us feel. When we feel good, we’re want to spread that feeling around. We share that positive feeling with everyone we encounter. Good service makes a difference. It feels good to receive it, and it feels great to give it!

  2. Impact

We never know how or when we make an impact until it has already happened. Everything we do has an impact; some good, some not so good. The choice is yours. When you’re feeling less than inspired, think about what it is that excites you about what you do. What did you want to accomplish when you first started? Keep that in mind and remember this Dalai Lama quote: ‘If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.’

  3. Influence

You don’t have to be a leader to have influence. We have the ability to influence others each day in everything that you do. People notice the way that you approach life. It is reflected in your personal and professional relationships. Just like having an impact, you don’t have to take grandiose actions to influence others. When you’re at your best, you do your best and you’ll inspire others to do the same. Misery may love company, but greatness is grows larger in the presence of other greatness.

  4. Patience

They say that patience is a virtue, and it can be a challenge to embrace this virtue under tight deadlines and pressures. When dealing with others, patience is a trait that everyone benefits from. If you’ve ever had someone lose their patience with you, you know it’s not a nice feeling. We never know everything that’s going on with someone. We all have days that staying focused in a challenge because of other things that are going on in our lives. The ability to practice patience can make the difference between a good day and a bad day for everyone involved.

  5. Resilience

We’ve all been through the fire at some point or another. The great thing is that we’re still here to tell the tale. Challenges and obstacles exist to show us what we’re made of. How many times have you made it through something that seemed impossible at the time? We’re stronger than we often give ourselves credit for. Think back on some of those difficult times and celebrate the fact that you made it through the other side. The next time you feel like you’re facing the impossible, remember that you’ve been here before, and you can get through it!

The next time you think that what you do doesn’t matter or that your contribution isn’t significant enough, just remember that we all have something to contribute and that we can all make a positive difference!
