The Cure for Excusitis!

May 24, 2015 Sandra Dawes

I’m reading David Schwartz’s The Magic of Thinking Big right now and I love his concept of excusitis. This is the excuses quoteaffliction of constantly making excuses for why you can’t do the things you want to do in life. Many of you know that I like to refer to myself as a recovering excuse maker, so you can imagine how well I related to this topic!

I learned the hard way that making excuses didn’t really ever truly justify why I didn’t take action. It might have made me feel okay about things in the short-term, but if I was truly being honest with myself, I was letting myself down. Making excuses wasn’t getting me any closer to my goals or making me feel good about myself. It took exhaustion with the status quo for me to finally stop making excuses and take action instead.

Action is the cure for excusitis. Here’s the thing, if you’re looking for a reason not to do something, you will always find one. If you’re tired of making excuses and are ready to do things differently and actually create the life you want, you must take action. I know from personal experience that when you take action towards the achievement of your goals, the universe begins to conspire with you to make those goals a reality.

It is important to understand that the excuses you make for not taking action are just concepts you created in your mind and not actual fact. Once you come to this realization, the excuses that the mind creates no longer have power. You have the power to decide whether you’re going to allow your fears to hold you back or inspire you to see what’s really possible.

When I decided to stop waiting for the “perfect time” to quit my job and purse my passion full time, I wasn’t sure I was doing the right thing. I did know that if I continued to wait for the stars to align, my dream might never become a reality. Once I submitted my resignation letter, it seemed that the stars did align. All of a sudden I was being offered speaking engagements and partnerships that I would have given anything to have, but they weren’t coming.

Making excuses doesn’t serve us. It holds us back from doing the things we were put on this earth to do. We weren’t meant to live mediocre lives. Excuses keep us stuck. If you’re ready to step into your greatness, you must be willing to let go of the excuses and take action towards the achievement of your goals. What excuses are you ready to let go of? ♥
