Avoiding the Groundhog Day loop

February 2, 2015 Sandra Dawes

Have you ever seen the movie Groundhog Day with Bill Murray? If you haven’t, the premise of the movie is that BillGroundhog-Day-2015-3 Murray’s character is stuck in a perpetual Groundhog Day. Every morning is February 2 and despite his many efforts, he can’t seem to break the loop. If you haven’t seen the movie, I’m going to stop there because I don’t want to ruin it for you! 😉

Do you sometimes feel like you’re stuck in a never ending loop? Of course the dates change, but at the end of the day, not much else has? I know that for a long time my life was a repetitive cycle of the same or similar experiences. Maybe the people in situations weren’t always the same, but the end result was. How many times when asked how things were going did I say, “you know, same sh!t different day”…

It took a while to realize that I was doing this to myself. The realization that time was progressing but my life and experiences weren’t turned out to be one of those a-ha moments people are always talking about. I finally understood that saying that the definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results.

Maybe you’re frustrated because it’s February 2nd and you haven’t made the progress or changed the habits you committed to at the beginning of the year. If you didn’t accomplish your goals last year, what are you going to do differently this year to get focused, take action and get things done? Things have to be different this year if you want to end the year on a different, better note. You can’t hold on to the same habits and think that things are going to magically come together!

Of course, changes don’t happen overnight. It took time for the habits that don’t serve you to be developed, so it’s going to take some time to “undo” them. All it takes is a commitment on your part to doing things differently on a daily basis. If you want to create a new habit, studies show that it takes at least 21 days to make it happen. That’s less than a month! You could be on your way to creating positive habits that will help you to accomplish your goals before the end of the month!

Many of us are stuck in our own Groundhog Day loop, but we just don’t realize it. It doesn’t have to be that way though. You have the power to break the cycle and do things differently at any moment. There is no secret to it. You just have to be willing, ready and able to make the commitment to doing things differently so that you can experience different and better things in your life. What’s stopping you? ♥
