I just facilitated my third Jump Start Your Year workshop. Back in 2011 I decided that my first live workshop would be around goal setting. I think it’s something that we’ve all struggled with at one point or another. We have all these dreams for our lives, but making them a reality can sometimes seem impossible.
I believe that one reason for this is that we choose goals that don’t serve us. What I mean by not serving us is that they don’t inspire us. Instead, they overwhelm us, making us think that our goals are simply impossible dreams, never to be attained.
Of course, this isn’t a positive way to view our goals. What would be the point in having goals if they were never meant to be a reality? Instead of having goals that leave us feeling discourage, we want to develop goals that challenge us, but at the same time feel achievable.
One of the issues with our goals is that we focus on a large end result like I want to lose 40 pounds or I want to save $10,000 this year. If we just focus on this final result, it may seem like it’s never going to happen. Because we’ve all become accustomed to instant gratification, waiting months, or years to make our goals happen seem too long!
I always suggest to my clients to break their goals down into small chunks. Instead of saying I want to lose 40 pounds think about what that would look like on a monthly or weekly basis. 2 pounds a week seems a lot more doable than 40 pounds, doesn’t it? Besides, it the wait gain or debt wasn’t accumulated overnight, so why do we think that we can get rid of these things quickly?
Patience is the name of the game when committing yourself to achieving any given goal. We have to remember that things don’t always happen the way that we want them to, but they’re always unfolding as they should. Don’t be discouraged by lack of immediate results. Think of your goals as seeds that must be sown, nurtured and cultivated before you begin to see the sprouts. You don’t always know all that is happening below the surface to bring your goal to life.
If you’re goals overwhelm you to the point of inaction, it’s time to take another look at them and remold them to serve you in a way that inspires and motivates you. Believe that they are possible and take action to making them a reality. Your goals exist to remind you of what is possible for your life. Do you want to have dreams, or are you ready to make your goals manifest into reality? ♥
