How valuable is your time?

August 15, 2010 Sandra Dawes

Time seems to be one of those precious commodities that we never seem to have enough of… We make comments like “there aren’t enough hours in the day” or “I just don’t have the time”. The reality is that we have to make time for the things that are important to us.

I used to spend a lot of my time doing things I thought I ought to do, rather than things I wanted to do. I would attend events, or help run errands that my heart just wasn’t into. For a long time, I was so consumed with not appearing to be mean, or selfish, I would commit my time without taking the time to consider what it is I truly wanted to be doing.

As I get older, and my perception of time seems to be flying at an incredible rate, I now have a new-found respect for time. My time is precious, so I’m not going to spend time doing anything that my heart isn’t into. I’ve also realized that my time is one of the most important things that I can give to others. When I think about my father who passed away almost 6 years ago – I don’t remember the gifts he’d given me over the years, I remember all of the amazing time we spent together. Whether it was going to baseball games, or sitting having conversations about life or telling jokes – those are the things that are most important to me and helped me through the grieving process.

Our time is precious and the reality is that the time we spend doing things that we don’t really want to do isn’t time well spent. It is time wasted, when we could be doing things that bring joy to ourselves and others, rather than creating resentments over time that we can never get back.

I’ve made a commitment to myself to spend more time with those I love and that includes spending some alone time every once in awhile with me! ♥
